This typical new build back garden in Colchester lacked both privacy and interest. It was overlooked by neighbouring properties on three sides and consisted of a small patio and a tired lawn.
Garden designers Tapestry Design Studios came up with an imaginative layout plan to make the space feel larger, more inviting and more private.
At the client’s request, there is no lawn in this scheme. Instead, a geometric layout of paths and patios creates wonderful planting pockets which are filled with colourful and aromatic plants.
This was a great project to work on, not least because we have a great relationship with the garden designer. Katie Moyes of Tapestry Garden Design always creates layout plans that are sympathetic to the landscapers’ needs as well as the client’s taste.
In this case, our biggest challenge was that this particular back garden in Colchester has very tight access. Machinery and materials needed to be brought through the garage. As you can see from the pictures – our mini digger only just squeezed through the door.
With a geometric layout like this one, accuracy is incredibly important. And so the garden makeover process began by carefully measuring every detail. Then we used spray paint, pegs and lines to transfer the design from the paper plan to the actual garden.
With the mini digger, we dug out the footprint of the patios and paths and adjusted the ground levels. Then the team started to create the small patio and the network of paths.
Finally, we improved the soil and prepared it for planting so that Katie’s amazing planting design could be brought to life.
When we visited the garden 6 months later, it looked incredible. Our clients had certainly been enjoying every aspect of the space, and they’d been carefully nurturing the plants too. This back garden in Colchester was a riot of colour and was clearly very attractive to butterflies and bees.
