Before the garden makeover

This was a fairly ordinary back garden on a housing estate just outside Frinton in Essex. The moderately sized garden was surrounded by neighbouring plots. The homeowners had recently added a new conservatory and wanted to be able to look out onto an attractive garden. A google search for “landscape designers Frinton” led them to the website for Tapestry Design Studios. The couple liked several of the portfolio gardens on the website and invited Katie Moyes to design their new garden for them.

The talent of good landscape designers

A good landscape designer has an eye for making spaces appear interesting but uncluttered. Katie is no exception. For this garden, her design took into account the age and lifestyle of the homeowners as well as the need for garden storage.

Katie’s design included:

• Plenty of space for seating and outdoor dining
• An elegant summerhouse which can also be used for storage
• Natural stone patio and paths with colours that compliment the property and the summerhouse
• Sturdy timber pergola for shade and privacy
• Generous lawn for the grandchildren to play on
• Low maintenance planting to soften the fence line and offer all year round interest
• A pretty Sorbus (Rowan) tree to hide the view of neighbouring properties

Building the garden

Our first task was to clear the garden of all the old, tired structures. Nest, we lifted the remains of the old patio and took them off to be recycled.

With the garden clearance completed, we set about marking out the new design. The hard landscaping included laying the patio and paths, assembling the summerhouse and building a timber pergola from scratch.

Next, we used treated timber to create a lawn edging before planting the borders. Our final jobs were to paint the summerhouse, lay the turf and tidy up after ourselves. It was an absolute joy to work on this project, knowing that we had left the homeowners with a garden they could enjoy long into their retirement. We were so pleased that the google search for landscape designers Frinton culminated in an elegant back garden for some lovely people.
